Signalling

When the Society took over the railway from its previous operator there was a signal box but nothing like this which has been built up by Peter Taylor, complete with a 16 lever miniature frame, signal repeaters and a working track circuit diagram.

Stopham Road Signal Box is now an essential part of the multi-train operation on South Downs Light Railway.

This facility is of a very high standard. Without it we would not be able to operate a safe and secure railway.

Brakes

Continuous air braking has been fitted to the covered, Mardyke and Uppingham coaches and to the two Exmoor locos, Flying Scotsman and Arun. The brakes are operated by valves in the brake van and on the engines. A compressor, powered by a 12 volt battery, is located in the brake van.
